Why Your Cat Won’t Protect You
The Conversation examines the results of a study that shows that unlike their canine counterparts, cats will take food from people who refuse to help their guardians. But the article cautions against interpreting this behavior as indicative that cats are somehow selfish or less loyal than dogs. Instead, it encourages us to understand that cats, who have been domesticated for a shorter period than dogs, may not yet be able to read our social cues or discern the nuances of our interactions. Contextualizing cat behavior in comparison to human behavior is therefore an example of “anthropomorphic bias” because it does not consider that cats may simply have a different way of thinking or perhaps have not learned how to interpret our actions. A thoughtful read.
